Meet the Coaches

Coach Michael

Coach Julio

Michael has been climbing since January of 2023 but quickly became obsessed with the sport. He has been coaching for around a year and loves helping young climbers take their technique to the next level!

A dynamite climber and communicator, Julio has been a team coach for several years. His favorite part of coaching is laughing with athletes and seeing them improve their personal records!

A bit about the Azara’s Capuchin Monkey…

We chose the name “Team Azara’s” because this distinctive species of the capuchin monkey perfectly mirrors the diverse skill levels of our climbers, from recreational enthusiasts to competitive athletes.

Just as the Azara’s Capuchin thrives in various environments, our climbers are trained to excel in different climbing styles making adaptability and resilience key shared traits.

Beyond adaptability, Azara’s Capuchins are renowned for their strength and intelligence. This powerful combination represents the heart and mind of our climbers.

Team Azara’s encapsulates the spirit of our young climbers: versatile, strong, and intelligent. Forces to be reckoned with, ready to conquer any climbing challenge thrown their way!

FAQs

What is Capuchin Climbing Team?

The Capuchin Climbing Team is for young climbers who are looking to dedicate a portion of their week learning to enjoy and excel at rock climbing!

Based on each athlete’s goals, they are trained and equipped with what it takes to seriously advance in climbing. Capuchin Climbing Team members are encouraged to (and often do for fun) climb on their own in addition to practice and are expected to show discipline, responsibility, leadership, and teamwork while practicing in the gym.

We are continually refining our Climbing Team program in hopes of creating a more intentional, customizable, and sustainable curriculum for all of our team climbers. Please return to this page or join our youth mailing list for updates.

What do athletes do during practice?

A typical practice session includes getting their gear on and immediately beginning a 20-30 minute stretching and warm up workout.

Then they move on to a 90-minute climbing session structured with specific lessons, workouts, drills, and movements to be practiced.  They are constantly supervised and encouraged by our coaches who know what each athlete needs to improve.

Our coaches also love to have fun! This means team members can look forward to evenings solely dedicated to fun & games along with monthly family climb nights!

What about gear and equipment?

Team members are encouraged to purchase their own equipment but they are allowed to use ClimbCap rental equipment (shoes, harness, chalk bag, belay device, ropes, etc.) during practice at no additional cost. Outside of practices they get free use of a pair of shoes, harness, and belay device at no additional cost.

How old does my child need to be to belay?

Athletes ages 8 - 11 can belay during practice due to direct coach supervision. However, persons younger than 12 years of age are not permitted to belay outside of practice. Thank you for your cooperation as we prioritize the safety of our youth in this way!

Does this team compete?

Competitive climbing is NOT required to be on Capuchin Climbing Team, however, training can be tailored toward becoming a high-level climber for an athlete’s competition or outdoor climbing needs.

We will have monthly Progress Tracking weeks where athletes can participate in friendly competition against their teammates or try to beat their own personal records by applying new skills from the previous training weeks.

Does the Team ever climb outdoors?

Yes! Climbing outdoors is a huge part of the experience and allows climbers to expand their range of skills outside of the gym environment.

We provide opportunities to climb outside several times a year under the supervision of our experienced coaches. These outings are more social climbing excursions than formally guided climbing trips and may have additional costs as well as certain climbing or behavior-related prerequisites associated.

Looking for Adventure?

Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you just want your kid to experience a team atmosphere. Team Azara’s is the right place to start. In climbing gyms across the country, there’s a sense of camaraderie among each team’s members. And at ClimbCap we ensure your child is given the opportunity to push themselves to greater heights in a positive environment.

With climbing’s debut in the 2021 Olympics, indoor climbing competitions have skyrocketed in the country. Capuchin Climbing Team gives climbers the camaraderie they would experience in traditional team sports, while still giving them the freedom to blaze their own trail- wherever their climbing goals take them.
