Wait…there are different types of climbing?

You bet your bottom dollar. Let’s break it down.

  • Quite common in non-mountainous terrain like Texas, this is climbing ropeless on boulders as opposed to climbing on cliffs. Boulders are typically 10 to 20 feet high, but can be much higher or shorter.

  • This form of climbing is when two people are tied together with a dynamic rope that goes from the climber up to the top, through or around an anchor, and back down to the belayer. As the climber ascends the wall, the belayer pulls the rope through a belay device, shortening the length of rope between the two.

  • Lead climbing entails dragging the rope up with you as you climb. To keep safe, you periodically clip into protection—installed equipment along the route—as you ascend.

  • An automatic belay device (AKA auto belay) takes up slack as you climb, thereby negating the need for a belayer on the ground. When the climber reaches the top, or if they fall, the device automatically catches the climber and slowly lowers them to the ground.
